Classes

Strength for Life is a progressive strength and balance program designed to improve your strength, balance and mobility. Classes may be held at a local gym, physio clinic, leisure or community centre.

Each participant in Strength for Life will have an individual assessment and program but will take part in a class that is designed for people of all levels of ability.

The instructors are all qualified exercise professionals who have undertaken accredited training through COTA ACT. They have a good understanding of the needs of older people and will create a friendly environment that you will feel comfortable in and provides an opportunity for socialising and meeting new people.

Types of classes

Classes delivered by accrediated exercise physiologists and physiotherapists who work with people with chronic conditions are known as tier 1 providers. Baseline and follow up testing is conducted to develop and monitor an individualised program for each participant.

Classes delivered by accrediated fitness professionals are known as tier 2 providers. These progressive strength training sessions are delivered in a group settings. Although the sessions are delivered in groups, individualised strength training programs are developed for each participant.

Strength for Life providers in the ACT

In the ACT there are instructors accredited to deliver the SFL program. The instructors are either personal trainers, exercise physiologists or physiotherapists. The SFL instructors deliver the program for a licensed SFL provider. The SFL providers are the life blood of the program and are what make the program tick! With providers dotted around Canberra, this enables the SFL program to be accessible to more senior Canberrans more often.
