Understanding Retirement Villages in the ACT Region
To make an informed choice it is very important to understand the difference between retirement villages and aged care facilities. Retirement villages in the ACT are regulated by the Retirement Villages Act 2012 (ACT), recently updated by the Retirement Villages Amendment Act 2016 (ACT). The regulation of retirement villages is different in all states and territories across Australia. In contrast to this, aged care facilities and services are regulated by the Commonwealth Government and are the same nation-wide.
Understanding contractual arrangements in relation to Retirement Villages in the ACT is often quite complex. To help you understand your rights better the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) and the ACT Government's Office of Regulatory Services has published some extremely useful information:

Aboriginal and / or Torres Strait Islanders
If you identify as an Aboriginal and / or Torres Strait Islander person, there are a number of government-funded transport, aged care services and health services available to help you.
Do you come from a culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) background?
If you are an older person from a culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) background, or you are caring for an older person from a CALD background, there are aged care services designed specifically for you that take this diversity into account.
